Chess company Play Magnus Group (PMG) has announced the launch of the MPL Indian Chess Tour, the first regional expansion of its Meltwater Champions Chess Tour.
The new series is being hosted in partnership with the mobile esports platform Mobile Premier League (MPL).
The MPL Indian Chess Tour is the first regional expansion of the world-renowned Meltwater season and boasts a star-studded line-up of 16 top talents from every corner of India. Its launch underlines the incredible boom in chess interest in India.
The MPL Indian Chess Tour will comprise four online tournaments followed by a final where the winner will be crowned as the MPL Indian Chess Tour Champion 2022.
The first stage of the series will see a rapid chess tournament running from the 31st of March to the 3rd of April. The competition will feature 16 Indian online chess players in a battle for a share of the $100,000 prize pool.
The winner of each tournament will receive an invitation to the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour and will also qualify for a knockout final with a $10,000 top prize. The matches will be streamed on chess24, chess24india and MPL’s YouTube and Facebook channels.
According to the press release, the launch of the MPL Indian Chess Tour underlines the boom of chess interest in India. Furthermore, Play Magnus Group reportedly aims to encourage the growth of online chess across the region.
